Project

SCAN’R – Collective Monitoring of Nautical and Maritime Activities, for the assessment of the risks of exposure of cetacean populations in Réunion to maritime traffic (2020 call)

Budget: 39,998.91 EUR
Website: www.globice.org/
Coordinator: Groupe Local d'OBservation et d'Identification des Cetacés - GLOBICE

As part of this project, GLOBICE has endeavored to better qualify the maritime traffic generated by different types of vessels operating in the territorial waters of Réunion: large-capacity vessels (cargo ships, tankers, passenger transport vessels, maritime works and recreational vessels) and small-capacity coastal vessels (diving vessels, cruise ships, rental vessels and cetacean observation vessels).

SCAN’R has made it possible to describe and characterize maritime traffic, locate areas of co-occurrence of maritime traffic and the 5 species of cetaceans common to Réunion, assess the risk of exposure of cetaceans to traffic and identify potential areas at risk.

On June 23, 2022, a workshop on the results of the SCAN’R project took place at CREPS in Saint-Paul. This working session in the presence of the various partners of the project (CROSS of Reunion, Marine Nature Reserve of Réunion, University of Réunion and other local actors) made it possible to open a discussion on the issue of the maritime traffic threat on cetaceans in Réunion and on possible ways to improve traffic management to promote their protection.
